Yaesu FT1XDE – most annoying things

Since a couple of weeks I own a Yaesu FT1-XDE handheld with built-in GPS and APRS. In general I am quite happy with this transceiver (maybe because I don’t have another one to compare) but there a quite a few things that are really annoying. Usability is definitely not one of the qualities of this handheld but maybe a device for amateur radio operators needs to be complicated 😉

Or maybe I just did fully understand the possibilities of the device and there are better ways to achive the functionality I want. So I will start a list now with the most annoying things and maybe we can have a discussion here with hints and ideas about the usage of the Yaesu FT1-XDE.

List of most annoying things of Yaesu FT1-XDE Liste der nervigsten Eigenschaften des Yaesu FT1-XDE
1 To change the volume you need 2 hands. One to press the “VOL” button and the other one to rotate the rotary switch. With some practise it’s possible to do it with one hand, but it needs some acrobatic finger skills.
2 You have to decide if you want to be able to open and change the squelch easily or if you want to be able to send a 1750Hz tone to open a repeater. The function of the moni | call button can only be changed in the menu. And don’t forget the current settings. It can happen that you want to open the squelsh to find a weak station but you send a 1750Hz tone instead. Too bad for the weak station…
3 There is no indicator if the GPS is currently active or not on the main screen or if there are enough satellites received to get a position. You have to find it somewhere in the menu.
4 Why are there no APRS profiles? You want to operate APRS in different situations? At home, in your car? With ISS / SAT? Too bad: for every different use case you have to change a lot of things in the menu: SSID, symbol, digi path, beacon message Warum gibt es keine APRS Profile?
5 No possibility to get the APRS messages on the serial port. The only way is to send them as GPS Waypoints, but a lot of information gets lost. Why is it not possible to send the messages raw so that they can be uses with APRS software? Or even better: Why not just a KISS mode?
6 You want to switch off the annoying beep for every key pressed, but you want to hear a signal on incoming APRS messages? Too bad. Switching off the key beep also switches of the APRS beep. (or am I doing something wrong?
7 Channel name only visible if the second VFO is deactivated. In dual VFO mode there is no chance to see the channel names, just the frequency Der Der Name des Speicherkanals ist nur im Mono-VFO-Modus sichtbar.
8 It’s really hard to see the time: Press A/B long to switch to one-vfo mode and then press F + A/B to see the time Wie spät ist es eigentlich? Kein Problem.
10 The display button always brings you back. Only in WIRE-X mode you need to scroll to find the “BACK” menu entry. Why not using DISP here, too?
11 Why is sometime PTT used to confirm some settings? There is a huge risk of unwanted transmissions Warum muss man einige Einträge mit PTT bestätigen, andere nicht?
12 Why is it not possible to log APRS on the SD Card to save messages on a pc later?
13 The WFM radio band starts at 88.0 MHz but in Germany it starts at 87.5 MHz, so I can not listen to any station between 87.5 and 88.0 Das UKW Rundfunk Band startet bei 88.0 MHz.
14 There is no possibility to clean all received APRS stations or messages at once. As there are up to 60 stations stored you just need 120 clicks to delete them all (V/M – Enter, V/M – Enter, V/M – Enter, V/M – Enter,,…)
15 Like other handhelds the FT1 has a white LED that can be used as a flashlight. Sometimes that is a quite useful feature. But Yaesu found a really complicated way to activate it: Press DISP for a second, scroll down to menu 8 (Config) press ENT and scroll down to 8 (LED light) and press ENT again. Having just one button like Wouxun or Baofeng devices would be too simple for real hams, right?
More coming soon… Die Liste wird bestimmt noch länger…
